Sweetcorn

Difficulty rating: medium
Suitable growing site: open ground with good drainage and nutrient rich soil

Days from sowing to harvesting: 50-90 days
Risk of cross-pollination: high
When to sow: sow corn kernels indoors in March-April in deep pots or root trainers at a depth of 2.5cm.
Requirements: good quality soil and regular watering.
Harvesting for eating: varies by variety, usually mid summer until autumn
Harvesting for seed collection: corn is notoriously hard to save seed from without cross-pollination. Only save seed from corn that isn't growing anywhere near corns of other varieties. Leave cobs for seed on the plant 4-6 weeks longer than those you harvest. Once harvested, allow to dry for up to three months before removing the kernels.
