Winter Burgess Buttercup - Squash

Cucurbita maxima

Story: We have grown this squash for the first time in 2023 and it did really well. It produced 3-5 fruits per plant on compact vines that were easy to train up an arch. The fruits themselves are dark green with a lighter green ‘button’ and dense, sweet flesh. The Real Seed Company say they are ‘considered by many to be one of the best eating squashes ever’! 

When to sow: Sow indoors in March-May in small pots, 1.5cm deep. Once they have around 5/6 leaves, harden off outside before planting out in June. 

Requirements: Squashes love soil which is rich in organic matter, mix in some compost and they'll thank you!

Harvesting: Anytime from July until the first frost!
