Perilla Frutescens

Story: This is a bold and beautiful bi-colour perilla. It was donated to us as a plug plant by Max - head grower at the Ottolenghi Kitchen Garden at Wolves Lane. It did really well in our greenhouse in 2023, despite going in quite late, it even flowered and set seed. It’s in the mint family and has a really unique aromatic flavour with deep umami undertones. Seeds need light to germinate so surface sow and keep moist by misting. Better germination is achieved by soaking seeds in water overnight before sowing. 

When to sow: March - July direct

Requirements: nutrient-rich soil, regular watering, and a lot of sun.

Harvest: June – October
