Story: Sorghum is a staple grain crop in much of East Africa and South Asia used to make flat breads and popped like popcorn. It can be used whole much like quinoa, buckwheat, pearl barley. It’s renowned for drought-tolerance. We first met this sorghum from a group of seed savers at the Peliti seed festival in the Rhodope mountains of Greece. It produces beautiful black seeds bourne on very tall plants - It also makes for a beautiful ornamental! 

When to sow: sow in root trainers or deep pots in March-May indoors.

Requirements: harden off once all chance of frost has passed and then plant out in moist soil- though plants will tolerate dry conditions as they grow- give each plant around 30cm space on all sides

Harvesting: August-October. When the plant is mature, the husks will be white in a maroon casing, make sure to harvest in a relatively dry period and then hang to dry in a place with good ventilation.
